Imlil: Morocco's Trekking Basecamp Village in the High Atlas
What to do in Imlil beyond launching the Toubkal trek — day walks, guesthouses, food and culture.

Imlil sits at 1,740 metres in a walnut-tree-lined valley, 90 minutes by road from Marrakech. Most travellers blow through it on the way to Toubkal — a mistake. With two or three days you can experience some of the most accessible Berber mountain culture in Morocco.
Getting There
Grand taxi from Marrakech (Bab Doukkala) costs 200 MAD for the whole car (up to 6 passengers) or 35 MAD per shared seat. Drive time 90 minutes.

Day Hikes
- Aroumd (1 hour, easy) — the largest village in the valley, terraced fields and walnut trees.
- Sidi Chamharouch (3 hours, moderate) — a sacred hamlet at 2,310 m with a marabout shrine.
- Tizi Mzik pass (4 hours, moderate) — panoramic view of the Toubkal massif from a 2,489 m pass.
- Tachdirt valley (full day with vehicle transfer) — quieter eastern arm of the range.
Where to Stay
Kasbah du Toubkal is the famous high-end choice (rooms from 1,800 MAD, but worth one night for the hammam and view). Dar Adrar and Dar Imlil are excellent mid-range guesthouses (450–700 MAD half-board).
Eating
All guesthouses serve excellent Berber tagines. The few cafés in the village square do simple omelettes and mint tea. Bring snacks if you are trekking — there are no shops above Aroumd.
Cultural Notes
Imlil is conservative Tashelhit-speaking Berber country. Modest dress is appreciated — long trousers for men, shoulders covered for women in the village.
Key Takeaways
- 90 minutes from Marrakech by grand taxi.
- Stay 2–3 days; do not just sprint to Toubkal.
- Tizi Mzik and Sidi Chamharouch are the best day hikes.
- Kasbah du Toubkal for splurge; Dar Adrar for value.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Imlil walkable for non-trekkers?
Yes — Aroumd and the lower valley are gentle walks suitable for anyone reasonably fit.
Do I need a guide for day hikes?
Not for marked village walks. For the passes (Tizi Mzik, Sidi Chamharouch), a local guide costs 250–400 MAD and is helpful.
Is there snow in winter?
Yes — December to March the village often has a dusting and the trails to passes require microspikes.
