At 1,800 metres, Ait Bouguemez is a high, flat-bottomed valley in the Central High Atlas. Locals call it Tarbatte Tassaaditte — 'the happy valley' — because the irrigated fields stay green when everywhere else turns brown. It is the best place in Morocco to experience Berber life at a slow pace.

How to Get There

From Marrakech, drive 5.5 hours via Azilal and the new asphalt road over the Tizi n'Tirghist pass. Shared grand taxis run from Azilal for 50 MAD.

What to Do

  • Walk to the 1,000-year-old Sidi Moussa granary on its hilltop.
  • Visit the dinosaur footprints near Iboaarazne.
  • Day-hike to the Tizi n'Ait Imi pass (2,905 m) for a panorama of the whole valley.
  • Spend an afternoon learning bread-making at a women's cooperative.

Where to Stay

Dar Itrane (Imelghas) and Ecolodge Touda are the two best guesthouses — solar-powered, locally owned, half-board around 400–600 MAD per person.

Best Time to Visit

April to October. May is peak green with wildflowers. Winter (December–March) is cold but the village is snow-dusted and beautiful.

Maroc Telecom works in most villages; data is patchy.

Is it suitable for families?
