Essaouira's local Alizés wind blows reliably from April to September at 18–25 knots — the highest wind statistics on the African Atlantic coast. The 4 km bay south of the medina is flat, sandy and free of reef. Together that makes the town the kitesurfing capital of Morocco.

Wind Season

April and May are warm and consistently 18–22 knots. June to August are the windiest months — 25 knots is typical, 35-knot days happen weekly. September is mellow and warm. October to March still has wind but only on weekly weather windows.

Schools

Five IKO-certified schools operate on the bay. A 3-day beginner course costs 1,800–2,500 MAD (170–230 EUR) including all gear and radio helmet. Bring your own harness if you have one.

Where to Stay

Stay at the southern end of the bay (Quemado area) to be within walking distance of the kite schools. Riads inside the medina are atmospheric but require a 20-minute walk or quick taxi to the launch zone.

Combining with Surfing

Most schools also offer SUP and downwind sessions. Surfboards can be rented in town and the small wave at Plage de Sidi Kaouki (25 km south) is a good wind-free alternative on light days.

Logistics

Essaouira is 3 hours by bus from Marrakech (90 MAD with Supratours). Airport is small but has direct seasonal flights from several European cities.

Key Takeaways

  • April–September is prime; June–August is windiest.
  • Stay in Quemado for walking access to schools.
  • IKO 3-day course is the standard beginner package.
  • Bring your own harness if you have one; everything else is rentable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I learn in 3 days?

Most students stand on the board by the end of a 9-hour course. Riding upwind reliably takes a full week.

Is the water cold?

16–19°C; a shorty wetsuit is enough in summer, a 3/2 in shoulder seasons.

Are there hazards?

Strong sideshore wind can push you out to sea. Always launch with a school until you can self-rescue.
